The thing about being a fan of a band that has been around as long as Duran Duran is that it involves a lot of ups and downs.
Coming off the high of a U.S. promotional tour and an acclaimed new album, "All You Need Is Now," fans were counting down to the kickoff of Duran's world tour. Debated were the merits of the band turning down an offer to open for Take That and which songs Duran would add to its set list for the tour's first dates to be played in the U.K.
Then suddenly, Duran and its fans were hit with a low when the tour began unraveling date by date. Some fans suggested the band was scrapping the dates because some of the venues hadn't sold out or for some other selfish reason.
But in fact, lead singer Simon Le Bon is suffering from a throat and vocal problem, described as acute laryngitis, that possibly could threaten his career.
Some fans raised questions about the timing of the announcements. Duran called off the dates mostly one by one, including a big show Saturday at London's O2 Arena that was postponed about a day beforehand.
Though said fans did incur expense and effort in making plans to attend the shows, too quickly did they question Duran's handling of the situation. In blogs on the official website, members of Duran Duran have explained the logistics of canceling gigs, including insurance reasons behind the decisions.
But the bottom line is Duran wanted to play the shows. Waiting until the last possible minute and attempting to rehearse was the band's way of testing the waters. Le Bon has blogged that even he doesn't know when he will be well enough to sing again.
In Duran's words: "Nobody knows what's gonna happen tomorrow." But here's hoping Duran is able to perform again at the first rescheduled tour date a week from now.
